PTE OVERVIEW

PTE stands for Pearson Test of English Academic. The PTE Academic test examines you on real life English skills needed for going to university or living abroad. Each of the four skills are tested but in a way that reflects real life settings, whilst also testing academic skills. This test is recognized by thousands of universities worldwide and can also be used for VISA purposes in the UK and Australia.

The test is taken on a computer and is a three hour session. It appears in twenty different formats, from multiple choice questions to essay writing. Also, throughout the test you will hear different accents as it changes from an English accent, to an American etc. This tests how well you can understand all types of spoken English.

Getting your results is often quick, with over 85% getting their results in only two days. The PTE Academic is scored against the Global Scale of English; this is the scale that allows people to track their progress on learning English.

PTE Academic assesses listening, reading, speaking and writing all via computer in a single 3 hour test session. To complete a PTE Academic test, you will need to attend a secure Pearson test centre. You will use a computer and headset to listen to, read and respond to questions.

During the three-hour test session there will be three main parts to the test: speaking and writing (together), listening and reading. There are twenty different question formats, ranging from multiple choice through to essay writing and interpreting information.

PTE Academic assesses real-life, academic content, so you will hear excerpts from lectures and view graphs and charts. You will hear a range of accents in the test, from British and American to non-native speakers, so you will be exposed to the type of accents you will encounter in everyday life.
